The Biden administration is finally moving to protect one of the U.S.’s most important marine ecosystems: Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed. Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed is the world’s largest salmon fishery. The bay produces nearly half of the world’s supply of wild salmon. Millions of salmon return to the bay every year to spawn, creating one of the ‘greatest wildlife migrations on Earth.’ The region, however, has long been threatened by a mining proposal, known as the Pebble Mine. According to the EPA the Pebble Mine would cause ‘irreparable harm’ to the watershed. During the Trump administration, protections were withdrawn, but now the Biden administration seems to be getting things back on track.
