The Fight for Latino Access to Nature and Ocean Conservation

‘There’s so much dividing us right now, we need to find the things that connect us and work together to make advancements in our country’ — This clean water advocate is fighting for greater Latino representation in the fight for ocean conservancy and is working with Pres. Studies show that Latino communities are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change. A 2020 Yale report found that as a result of that impact, Latinos care more about addressing the climate crisis than any other ethnic group. Communities of color are three times more likely than white communities to live in areas deprived of nature, including the ocean. Mariana started her work initially as a specialist for the bilingual blended program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which incorporates both English and Spanish into presentations. #RacialDisparity #OceanConservation #Earth #Environment #Science #NowThis Connect with NowThis » Subscribe to NowThis News: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis Earth is daily news coverage of climate, sustainability, biodiversity, species extinction, environmental justice, and other planetary concerns. Pebble Mine Threatens Alaska’s Bristol Bay Watershed

This mining proposal is threatening the world’s largest salmon fishery — here’s what’s at stake if approved. » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/knowthis_youtube » Subscribe to NowThis Earth: https://go.nowth.is/Earth_Subscribe The Biden administration is finally moving to protect one of the U.S.’s most important marine ecosystems: Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed. Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed is the world’s largest salmon fishery. The bay produces nearly half of the world’s supply of wild salmon. Millions of salmon return to the bay every year to spawn, creating one of the ‘greatest wildlife migrations on Earth.’ The region, however, has long been threatened by a mining proposal, known as the Pebble Mine. According to the EPA the Pebble Mine would cause ‘irreparable harm’ to the watershed. During the Trump administration, protections were withdrawn, but now the Biden administration seems to be getting things back on track. #Alaska #Salmon #Environment #Earth #Fish #Science #NowThis Connect with NowThis » Subscribe to NowThis News: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis Earth is daily news coverage of climate, sustainability, biodiversity, species extinction, environmental justice, and other planetary concerns.
